Description

Salzburger Land - Lake Kaltern

On four stages with a total of approx. 420 km and approx. 8500 hm from Salzburger Land to Kalterer See: This racing bike dream tour takes us over two of the most beautiful Alpine passes, Grossglockner and Passo Giau and is aimed at well-trained racing cyclists.
We assume a good basic condition. The climbs are moderate (except for 2 short steep ramps in the Berchtesgaden National Park) and well rideable with a road bike.
Großglockner, Passo Giau and Lake Kaltern as the destination.
A great route starting in the Berchtesgadener Land, through the Hohe Tauern and the Dolomites to Lake Caldaro. Our starting hotel is located at Lake Waginger. From there we drive through the Berchtesgaden National Park to Bruck at the foot of the Großglockner. We continue over the Glockner and Lienz through the Puster Valley, past the Three Peaks to Cortina. Via Passo Giau and Passo Pordoi we head west. On the last day we go over the Karer Pass between Latemar and the Catinaccio to Lake Caldaro.
Details & stages
2 pm: Meeting in Bad Reichenhall to get to know each other, bike check, short roll-in tour through the beautiful Berchtesgadener Land. Discussion of the overall tour based on maps. Excellent evening menu in the country inn.
On country roads with little traffic, we travel from Bad Reichenhall to Ramsau. We drive through the car-free Berchtesgaden National Park over the Hirschbichlpass and on via Zell am See to Bruck.
Today is our royal stage: Directly from Bruck we head for the Großglockner High Alpine Road. With its 2505 meters, the Großglockner is the highest pass on our tour. Via Lienz and the Pustertal valley, we then continue towards the Dolomites, but spend another night in Austria.
A few more kilometers and we are in Italy, heading for the Three Peaks. We pass Lake Misurina and head for the Passo Tre Croci. At lunchtime we take a short break in Cortina. Then, as a further highlight, the Passo Giau (2233 m) lies ahead of us in the afternoon - another, albeit quite demanding, treat. The gradient averages a good 10 percent over 10 kilometers. Once we reach the top, we are rewarded with a gigantic panorama of the Dolomites! This is followed by a rapid descent.
From Arabba we first go up to Passo Pordoi, then down to Canazei, then we go downhill for a bit through the Fassa Valley and then enter the Karer Pass road. At 6 percent, the climb is rather leisurely up to the foot of the Catinaccio with magnificent views to the Latemar and finally to Lake Carezza. Via side roads we descend into the Adige Valley. At the end, the finale at Lake Kaltern beckons.
After breakfast: Transfer back to Lake Waginger.
