Description

Garmisch - Lake Como

The tour leads from Garmisch over partly high alpine passes to Livigno and Lake Como and is with 7,100 meters of altitude and 395 kilometers in six stages a very nice tour for mountain bikers who cycle regularly and are looking for the combination of riding fun, landscape experience and sporting challenge.
Ideally, you have already gained experience on tours in the Alps or have already completed a Transalp. Compared to our classic routes to Lake Garda, the technical demands of this tour are much more challenging due to a higher percentage of high alpine trails. The route runs mainly on paved and unpaved bike paths, forest roads and farm tracks. Also steep ascents and descents on gravel roads, easy single trails (S0 - S1) with roots and small steps as well as short pushing passages are part of this Transalp.
Landscape, landscape, landscape - and really high alpine: The mighty Zugspitze massif, the high alpine transitions between Austria and Switzerland, lonely wide valleys at the Swiss National Park, the 4000m peaks of the glaciated Bernina massif, the wonderfully blue Upper Engadine lakes around St. Moritz, the pristine Bergell and the longing destination Lake Como.
From Garmisch, the route leads to the picturesque lakes of the Zugspitze Arena and over the Fernpass into the Inn Valley. Through Paznaun to Ischgl and over the high alpine border ridge into Switzerland. On the edge of the Swiss National Park, we discover unspoiled nature in Val S-charl and continue over the Ofen Pass to sporty Livigno in Italy. At the Forcola di Livigno we return to the Swiss canton of Graubünden and past the Upper Engadine lakes into Bergell, before finally reaching Lake Como in Mediterranean temperatures.

5 p.m. Meeting in Grainau near Garmisch for getting to know each other, bike check, adjustment of rental bikes and dinner. Discussion of the overall tour based on maps.
From Grainau we start in the direction of the idyllically situated Plansee. Over the Fernpass, we then travel along the Via Claudia to Imst. In the hotel we strengthen ourselves in the evening with a delicious biker menu.
From Imst we first crank along the Inntalradweg via Mils, Schönwies and Zams to Landeck. A short detour to the foot of the striking Kronburg offers a great impression of the Inn Valley. On the varied Paznaun Valley Trail we continue - on the balcony on the second floor above the valley, so to speak - in gentle waves to Ischgl. You hardly notice how the meters in altitude add up. It's not until we get to the hotel that we're happy to find that our tired legs can put the beautiful wellness area to good use.
We take the cable car up to the Viderjoch and marvel at the high alpine panorama. We wind our way up the last meters, some of which are quite steep, and cross the main alpine ridge on spectacular ridge paths - from there we head down into a quiet, green valley on forest roads and easy trails to Samnaun and on into the Inn Valley. Finally, we cycle on a panoramic high trail through the Lower Engadine to Scuol.
From Scuol we drive along the edge of the Swiss National Park to S-charl and almost imagine ourselves in Canada. The landscape seems so vast, powerful and lonely. In the afternoon we go over the Passo Costainas to the Ofenpass, and in the downhill rush 450 meters of altitude down to the tunnel that leads to Livigno. Through the tunnel we are putted, and then it's: Benvenuti in Italia - in duty-free and sporty styled Livigno.
We leave Livigno on easy trails and ride towards Forcola di Livigno and back to Switzerland. A short downhill is followed by a short stretch on asphalt up to the Bernina Pass. From here, flowing trail fun awaits us until Pontresina. In between, we can enjoy the unforgettably beautiful view of the Bernina group with the Morteratsch glacier over coffee and cake at the Morteratsch train station. Not far from the café is a show dairy worth seeing. A beautiful single trail brings us to Pontresina. We continue on beautiful paths to St. Moritz. The last kilometers we cycle along the Upper Engadine lakes to Silvaplana.
We start leisurely and continue south. The surrounding mountains are reflected in the crystal-clear water of the Upper Engadine lakes. A short detour brings us to a fantastically situated rustic alpine pasture and a wildly romantic mountain lake. At the Maloja Pass the scenery changes. Steep and elegant mountains of granite, vast forests and small villages rich in history and art characterize the Bergell, where time seems to run slower than elsewhere. The climate becomes noticeably more Mediterranean as we cruise down through chestnut forests and quaint villages to Chiavenna. After a delicious ice cream, it is only a few kilometers to our destination.
After breakfast transfer back to Grainau.
