Description
Füssen - Venice
Facts
On the traces of the Romans! On this route, which in large parts leads exactly along the famous Via Claudia Augusta, we want to offer you not only a fantastic tour through the Alps, over the main Alpine ridge, through Trentino, Belluno and Veneto, but also expand your historical background. All this while having fun and chatting while cycling, of course, because that's the most important thing.
Requirements
We are on a gourmet tour, but of course a good basic condition is necessary. Except for the Fernpass and the main Alpine ridge with the Reschenpass, there are hardly any major climbs to master. But the many small mountains should not be underestimated!
Highlights
Many historical buildings directly on our route: e.g. the royal castle Neuschwanstein, the Reschensee with the snow-covered Orlter in the background, the Vinschgau with the many apple orchards, the wine route through the region with the most castles in Europe, the Belluneser mountains with their wonderful lakes and of course the destination itself: Venice
Route
From Füssen, we take the direct route to Tyrol. We overcome the Fernpass to reach the Inn Valley. Following the Inn River, we cross the Reschen Pass to the medieval village of Glurns, from where we enjoy our regeneration stage the next day on the well-known Etschtal cycle path downhill to picturesque Merano. In Mezzocorona we leave the South Tyrolean Wine Road to cross the Valsugana via Trento and the Lago di Caldonazzo. Via Feltre and Montebelluna we finally reach Mestre and Venice. And all this for the most part on a road whose milestones were laid as early as 15 BC!

Arrival
Sunday
Stage 1 - From Füssen to Imst: approx. 70 km; approx. 900 hm
Today we pedal via Reute further and further on the Via Claudia Augusta through the valley between the two castles "Fortress Schlosskopf" and "Fort Claudia" via Leermoos to the Fernpass. On Sunday afternoon there is usually no truck traffic here, which is why we can really enjoy the descent to the Fernsteinsee. At the fantastic turquoise shimmering lakes we also make a lunch break. Strengthened, we then continue via Nassereith to Imst, where we spend our first night in Tyrol.
Monday
Stage 2 - From Imst to Glurns: approx. 100 km; approx. 1400 hm
For this day we have the royal stage. Always on the bike path following the Inn, we come to Landeck, from where we continue, slightly uphill, the Inn Valley to Prutz. Shortly before the Austria-Switzerland border we have a lunch break, before we reach the famous ski resort of Nauders a little off the Via Claudia Augusta via the Norbertshöhe. Here we follow the old traces of the Romans again in undulating terrain to the Reschensee lake, which we can admire with its blue water and the Ortler always standing out in the background directly from the bike path. From here it is not far to the medieval village of Glurns with its completely preserved town wall, which we reach on a wonderful descent along the bike path.
Tuesday
Stage 3 - From Glurns to Merano: approx. 60 km; approx. 100 hm
After the difficult stage on Monday, we have earned this "rest day". As good as only downhill we jet further down the Etschtal cycle path on the old Via Claudia Augusta to Merano. Here we have enough time today to relax at the hotel pool or simply stroll through the leafy streets of Merano with an ice cream.
Wednesday
Stage 4 - From Merano to Trento: approx. 95 km; approx. 550 hm
Freshly refreshed, we set off for Lana, from where we tackle the first part of the Gampen Pass to Tisens. After a first "summit break", we roll down to Nals and embark on the South Tyrolean Wine Road for the first time. In order to be able to take in this really beautiful part of South Tyrol, we stay a little off the Via Claudia Augusta, which continues to run along the Adige River. Here we pass the region with the most castles in Europe until we reach Lake Kaltern, where we rest at the Klughammer beach. From Mezzocorona we return to the Roman road along the Adige River, which leads us to our stage destination Trento.
Thursday
Stage 5 - From Trento to Feltre: approx. 105 km; approx. 1150 hm
From Trento we start via Civezzano into the Val Sugana. Over the rise between the Lago di Caldonazzo and the Lago di Levico we continue along the valley in the middle of overgrown rock faces. In Borgo Valsugana we leave the Via Claudia Augusta on the left and meander along the Brenta River on the cycle path in the direction of Primolano, where we wind our way up a few hairpin bends to Fastro. From here it is not too far to Feltre, where we can end the day by exploring the old town, which is well worth seeing.
Friday
Stage 6 - From Feltre to Venice: approx. 100 km; approx. 650 hm
One more stage, then the goal is reached! A mountain range is still in front of us, but we overcome it via an insane pass. The Passo San Boldo has a unique road layout. From Treviso we meet the Via Claudia Augusta again and leave the very last mountains behind us. Through the flat Veneto region, which is characterized by agriculture, we advance further and further to our destination Venice. We spend the night in Mestre and leave our bikes there as well. It is easy to get to St. Mark's Square by public transportation and water cab. In the city center of Venice cycling is forbidden anyway. We can either celebrate the tour in the alleys of Venice or stay in Mestre. The old town of Mestre is also very nice. Uli has lived there for a few months and still has one or two recommendations.
