Description

Garmisch - Lake Garda

The tour leads from Garmisch over the Reschenpass through the Vinschgau Valley and over the Gampenpass, further east along the Brenta-Dolomites to Lake Garda. With its 8900 m ascent and about 400 kilometers in 5 stages this tour is a medium Transalp with many highlights.
The trails are mostly easy passable – but you have to be prepared for some parts where you have to hop off your bike. A very good fitness level, essential basics of driving technique as well as the necessary condition to sit 5 days in a row in the saddle are fundamental prerequisites for this tour.
For landscape lovers: Zugspitzmassif, Reschenpass, panorama of the Ortler group, the apple orchards of the Vinschgau Valley, great views of The Dolomites on the way to the Gampenpass and finally magnificent views to the Brenta-Dolomites and the Lago di Garda appear as a mega slideshow - but even better: it's all live!
From Garmisch we start our tour in the shadow of the Zugspitze along the the Eibsee to Ehrwald and over the Marienbergjoch to Nassereith and Imst in the Inn Valley. Along the old pilgrims' path and the Fliesser Platte we get to the Upper Inn Valley and further to Nauders. Above the Reschenpass we cycle along a panorama trail on historical grounds over the Italian border, then along the Reschensee to Glurns and through the fruit plantations and hidden singletrails to Merano. We cross the Gampenpass to Coredo and follow the way at the foot of the Brenta-Dolomites on spectacular trails further towards Lake Garda. A great downhill finally leads us to the shore of the lake, directly in the port of Riva del Garda.

Details & stages
05:00 pm: In the evening we meet up for dinner in Grainau. Get to know each other, bikecheck, tour preparation and trip briefing based on maps.
From Grainau we start our tour to the picturesque placed Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze. We climb up to the Hochthörlehütte in Tyrol. Great trails and speedy asphalt lead us to Ehrwald. We cycle nicely up and down along the panoramic trail to Biberwier and over the Marienbergjoch further to Nassereith. A fantastic singletrail at the end of the downhill makes you want more. On the traces of the old Roman Road Via Claudia Augusta we roll into the Gurglvalley nearby Imst.
We follow the Tyrolean Jacob’s Path to the nicely situated Kronburg. From here a casual trail leads us to Landeck. After the ascent up to the Fließer Platte we cycle back down into the Inn Valley on flowy trails and with wonderful panorama. Along the Transalp Classic Via Claudia we ride to the Swiss border. At the end of the day a robust ascent leads us to a beautiful moorland lake. The downhill trail to Nauders is the absolute top class!
Today one highlight chases the other: First we cycle 800 meters up to the Plamorter Boden to enjoy gigantic views of the Ortler and the Reschenpass. A nice downhill on the new Drei-Länder-trails to the Reschensee, the first Italian cappuccino in the medieval Glurns and finally finest singletrails apart from the apple orchards through the Upper Vinschgau follow. At the end of this stage the Mediterranean Merano awaits us with a great hotel, whirlpool and delicious ice-cream. If the conditions are optimal we shouldn’t miss the opportunity to take the diversion via the Uina Canyon and the Sesvenna Plateau.
From Merano we start along the fruit plantations towards Bolzano. On Following the old Mühlenweg we cycle along forest and gravel paths up to the Gampenpass. Over a fantastic forest path downhill we pass stunning canyons and magnificent waterfalls into the Val di Non. Another highlight of this stage is a super trail into a small remote hermit valley. A short ascent to two beautiful situated lakes close to our stage destination Coredo follows. The beautiful situated wellness hotel with a wonderful panoramic view of the Brenta Dolomites offers the best Italian cuisine in the evening and numerous spa activities. We are thus well prepared for our final stage on Friday!
And finally, one of the most beautiful stages of this tour! The route takes us along great trails past the magical Dolomiti di Brenta. Above the Lago die Molveno the Brenta Dolomites seem to be close enough to touch. From Ponte Arche it increases moderately to the Passo Ballino and the Caribbean blue Lago di Tenno. A last short uphill and then on a nice well drivable trail more or less directly to the lake. The view over the Lago di Garda is fabulous. Only a few meters separate us from a jump into the cool water! We’ve made it!
After breakfast we depart with the bus back to Grainau.
