Description
Garmisch - Lake Como
Facts
This tour is a challenging road bike transalp through the beautiful Austrian and Swiss mountain landscape with final destination in Italy at Lake Como.
Requirements
We assume a good basic condition and a little climbing skills. The climbs are spectacular, but well rideable with a road bike.
Highlights
Transalp feeling without risk. This tour is doable with a good basic condition and a few kilometers in the legs.
For connoisseurs: There are enough opportunities for breaks with culture and coffee - along the Inn, in the beautiful Engadin with Silvaplana and St. Moritz and at Lake Como.
Route
From Grainau near Garmisch we drive towards Tyrol and Leermoos. Our first pass is at Namlos, then we enter the Lechtal. Over the Hahntennjoch we reach the Inntal and over the Piller Höhe in the Pitztal to Prutz. We follow the Inn River and drive over the Reschen Pass into the Vinschgau Valley. Over the Ofenpass we come into the Swiss National Park. With a shuttle through a tunnel we reach Livigno. Over the Forcula di Livigno and the Berninapass we descend into the Engadin to Pontresina and St. Moritz. Along the Upper Engadine lakes we arrive at the Maloja Pass and then it's all downhill to Lake Como.

Wednesday
Stage 1 - Grainau - Prutz: ca. 125 km; ca. 2950 m ascent
From Grainau, the route climbs gently to Leermoos. Over a small side pass we drive into the Lechtal. There it goes a short piece in the direction of Arlberg and then left up the mountain. At the beginning and the end the Hahntennjoch is quite steep and we get a foretaste of the next days. In Imst we have lunch break. Over the Piller Höhe we drive first into the Pitztal and then back into the Inntal to Prutz, to our stage destination today.
Thursday
Stage 2 - Prutz - Livigno: ca. 120 km; ca. 2500 m ascent
Today we follow the Inn upstream. Over the Nobertshöhe we come to Nauders from where it is only a few meters in altitude to the Reschenpass. Rapidly we descend into Vinschgau. Here we take a rest. Now begins a long climb up to the Ofenpass. A short descent brings us into the Swiss National Park and to the well-known tunnel before Livigno. A shuttle takes us through the tunnel. From there we have a road protected by a gallery, where even the professionals like to train.
Friday
Stage 3 - Livigno - Comer See: ca. 125 km; ca. 1150 m ascent
We pedal smoothly, but soon we're heading up to the Forcula di Livigno. A short descent and we are already at the second pass ascent to the Bernina. Here we have a great view of the 4000m peaks of the Upper Engadine, right at the foot of the Palüs. But on the descent from Bernina to Pontresina the panorama gets even better. We continue past the Upper Engadine lakes to the Maloja Pass. We descend this pass on a wonderfully endless descent and soon reach our long-awaited destination, Lake Como. In the evening we celebrate our Transalp with a typical dinner.
