Requirements
Except a few sections where you have to carry or push your bike, this tour is easy to ride. For the downhills a good driving technique and good bike control are necessary. A very good basic level of fitness is a precondition.
Highlights
For landscape lovers: Wonderful climb up to the Pfitscher Joch with a view to the border comb region, beautiful mountain huts in the South Tyrolean mountain world, within one’s reach peaks of the Brenta Dolomites and the view of the Lake Garda. Cityscapes: The beautiful old city of Sterzing, ice-cream under palm trees in Merano, jet-set-people in Madonna di Campiglio.
Route
This tour leads from Tegernsee into the Inn Valley. Further we ride through the Zillertal and along the Pfitscher Joch over the main ridge of the Alps. From Sterzing we ride apart off the main road to Merano. From here into the beautiful Trentino and the Val di Sole to Madonna di Campiglio. From here to Passo Bregn de l’Ors and then the Lago di Garda is actually within reach.

Sunday
Stage 1 - Kreuth - Stumm: ca. 90 km; ca. 1800 m ascent
We pass the Tegernsee Mountains and cycle over Wildbad Kreuth towards Erzherzog-Johann-Klause. Along the Brandenberger Ache we get to Brixlegg. After a short part along the river Inn we do a little detour into the Alpbachtal and cycle past the Reither Kogel over a mountain road into the Zillertal. We cycle the last few kilometers along the riverbank of the Ziller to Stumm.
Monday
Stage 2 - Stumm - Sterzing: ca. 80 km; ca. 1800 m ascent
On the Zillertal Cycling Path we warm up for today’s long ascent. From Mayrhofen we cycle on side streets over Ginzling uphill to the Schlegeis reservoir. The enormous dam wall is impressive and already visible from far away. At the reservoir we can strengthen ourselves with a view to the Schlegeis reservoir for the remaining ascent. We then tackle the last kilometers up to the Pfitscher Joch (2240 m). Here we cross the main Alpine ridge and the Italian border. It’s time for the first cup of cappuccino. The panorama downhill into one of the most beautiful valleys of the Central Alps rewards for our efforts uphill. We spend the night in Sterzing.
Tuesday
Stage 3 - Sterzing - Meran: ca. 60 km; ca. 1500 m ascent
Today more than 1100 meters up at a stretch lie ahead of us. The climb up starts right after Sterzing – it goes up to the Jaufenpass. But we get to know the calm and beautiful side of the Jaufenpass. Removed from the daily hectic routine we stop for a bite to eat right behind the pass, with a fantastic view into the Passeier Valley and to the mountains of the Texel Group. After a nice downhill we tackle a few counter ascents to pick up the beautiful trails to St. Martin in the Passeier Valley. From here we follow the Passer to Merano.
Wednesday
Stage 4 - Meran - Dimaro: ca. 80 km; ca. 2300 m ascent
We have a long day to go. Today’s goal is Dimaro – in between there are some meters in height to tackle. We cycle up into the Ultental and get over the Gampenalm into Trentino. Here we let us taste the delicious cheese. Over adventurous paths we get to the Lago di Santa Giustina di Cles. From here we follow the cycling path to Dimaro into the Val di Sole.
Thursday
Stage 5 - Dimaro - Lomaso: ca. 60 km; ca. 1800 m ascent
On the way from Dimaro to Madonna di Campiglio first impressions to the Brenta reveal. Today we have a scenic dream day. It is difficult to try to break away from this fantastic mountain panorama. A gigantic cascade and clearings with the entire Brentamassiv in the background. The kilometers will quickly lose meaning. After a short stop at the lake a pushing passage awaits us up to the Passo Bregn da l’Ors. Having reached the summit, we have a wonderful view to the mountains of the Adamello Group. Just like a real dream day! From here a speedy downhill brings us to Ponte Arche. A short uphill and we reach Lomaso where we spend the night.
Friday
Stage 6 - Lomaso - Gardasee: ca. 25 km; ca. 600 m ascent
Even though we almost can guess the Lake Garda, we first have to earn the fantastic view to the Lago. After the last steep climb we enjoy the quietness before we cycle down towards Riva. A stopover at the Rifugio San Pietro is however needed; the view from here is unique. But the anticipation of the impending arrival at the lake gets us quickly back in the saddle. Final sprint! We can enjoy the last downhill to the lake to the full – then we can celebrate!
