Description

Garmisch - Lake Como

This tour leads from Garmisch over partly high-alpine passes through Livigno to Lago di Como. With 7100 m ascent and about 396 kilometers in six stages this tour is ideally suited for well trained beginners.
This tour runs mainly along marked cycle paths. The stages are generally not particularly difficult. Nevertheless, driving technique skills especially for single trail passages and the partly long gravel descents should already exist. A good basic endurance is necessary for this tour.
Landscape, scenery, landscape – namely very high-alpine: the impressive Zugspitzmassif, the high-alpine border crossings between Austria and Switzerland, lonely wide valleys in the Swiss National Park, view of the 4000+ m peaks of the glaciated Bernina massif, the beautiful blue Upper Engadine lakes around St. Moritz, the original Bergell and our dream destination Lake Como.
From Garmisch we ride to the picturesque lakes of the Zugspitzarena and over the Fernpass into the Inn Valley. Through the Paznaun we ride to Ischgl and over the high-alpine border to Switzerland. On the edge of the Swiss National Park we discover unspoilt nature in the Val S-Charl and continue cycling over the Ofenpass to the sporty styled Livigno in Italy. At Forcola di Livigno we head back to the Swiss Canton Graubünden and along the lakes of the Upper Engadine past Bergell before reaching Lago di Como with its Mediterranean climate.

Details & stages
06:00 pm: In the evening we meet up for dinner in Grainau. Get to know each other, bikecheck, tour preparation and trip briefing based on maps.
From Grainau we start towards the idyllic situated Plansee. Over the Fernpass we cycle smoothly along the old Roman Road Via Claudia Augusta to Imst. In the evening we strengthen ourselves with a typical biker-menu.
From Imst we ride via the old pilgrim way to Landeck. A short side trip to the famous castle Kronburg offers an amazing impression of the Inn Valley. On the varied Paznauner valley trail we cycle in gentle waves to Ischgl. We hardly notice how the elevation meters sum up. In the hotel in Ischgl our tired legs are happy about the beautiful wellness area.
Today we take the cable car up to the Viderjoch and are amazed at the high-alpine panorama. We cycle the last partly quite steep meters up and cross the main Alpine ridge on spectacular mountain crest paths. From here it goes on forest paths and easy trails in a green and peaceful valley down to Samnaun and further into the Inn Valley. On a panorama mountain highway we continue by driving through the Lower Engadine to Scuol.
From Scuol we almost ride through the Swiss National Park to S-charl. The landscape reminds of Canada with its vast, mighty and lonely landscape. In the afternoon we cycle over the Pass da Costainas to the Ofenpass and further in a descent rush 450 meters of altitude down to the tunnel which leads us to Livigno. We are transported through the tunnel and then we are in Italy - In the sporty styled and duty free Livigno.
Over easy trails we leave Livigno and continue to Forcola di Livigno and back to Switzerland. After a short downhill we follow a short climb on asphalt up to the Bernina-Pass. From here we enjoy flowy trail fun to Pontresina. In between, we can enjoy the beautiful views of the Bernina and Morteratsch Glacier over coffee and cake at the railway station at Morteratsch. Close to the cafes, there is a show dairy. A magnificent single trail leads us to Pontresina. We continue on beautiful ways to St. Moritz Bad. The last kilometers we cycle along the lakes of the Upper Engadine to Silvaplana.
We start the day pleasantly and ride further towards south. The surrounding mountains are reflected in the crystal clear water of the lakes of the Upper Engadine. A short side strip brings us to a wonderfully situated rustic mountain pasture and a wildly romantic mountain lake. The scenery changes at the Malojapass. Steep and elegant mountains of granite, extensive forests as well as small, historic and artful villages shape Bergell, where the clock has slown down. The climate is noticeable Mediterranean while we cycle through chestnut forests and rustic villages downwards to Chiavenna. After an tasty ice-cream it is only a few kilometers to our final destination.
After breakfast we depart with the bus back to Grainau.
